Holiday destination
Oostmahorn is a fortified village dating back to the early 16th century with an extensive history on the former Lauwers Sea. Today, it is an attractive tourist destination on the edge of Lauwersmeer National Park and houses two holiday parks.
The lake and the immediate surroundings are a paradise for nature lovers, fishermen, water sports enthusiasts, hikers, and cyclists. Dog lovers and their four-legged friends also get their money's worth here. Lauwersoog, for example, has a dog beach, and you are warmly welcome in the Ballastplaatbos, among other places.
There are various play options for children within a few hundred meters of the chalet, including a climbing frame on the beach, a playing field in holiday park De Skâns, and a playground with a bouncy castle in Esonstad, which is located behind the beach. There is also an indoor play paradise in the old Frisian fortified town, which is open for most of the year, and you can play a round of golf or footgolf at the Pitch & Putt. Bicycles or e-scooters can also be rented here.
For your daily groceries (a large supermarket is located a few kilometers away in Anjum), you can also go to the local supermarket in Esonstad. Other facilities include a restaurant, a pizzeria, and a snack bar. Even closer to the chalet—in the marina and on the dike—there are also 3 excellent restaurants with a beautiful view over the Lauwersmeer. You are in the right culinary spot on this former arm of the Wadden Sea. In the harbor of Lauwersoog, you will find a variety of seafood restaurants, and the former seaport of Zoutkamp on the other side of the Lauwersmeer also offers a wide selection of restaurants. Finally, a visit to historic and picturesque Dokkum with its forts, shops, and terraces is highly recommended.
To discover the national park from the water, you can of course bring your own boat, but just around the corner from the chalet, you can also rent various sloops, sailboats, or canoes at Paviljoen La Barca. A round trip, a trip to Dokkum, or a birdwatching excursion on the former cargo ship Vlinderbalg are also possible, and a ferry to Schiermonnikoog departs from here several times a week. From Lauwersoog, you can participate in seal and mudflat walking and, depending on the tide, enjoy the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site on the dry Engelsmanplaat.
The Lauwersmeer is a favorite among fishing enthusiasts. Many bream and perch swim here, but you can also fish for zander and bass. You can purchase a fishing license at the Holland1 reception.
Do you enjoy walking and want to relax? Visit, for example, the fishing village of Paesens-Moddergat on the sea dike with its museum 't Fiskershúske. You can also go on various daily mudflat walks in this authentic twin village. Or simply stay at home in and outside your chalet. Don't forget to look up late at night and enjoy the starry sky and the Milky Way. It is not without reason that the Lauwersmeer area (together with the Boschplaat on Terschelling) has been designated a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association. In short: a special place in a unique setting!
