Oostmahorn is a fortified village dating back to the early 16th century with an extensive history regarding what was once the Lauwerszee. Today, it is an attractive tourist destination on the edge of Lauwersmeer National Park and houses two holiday parks.
The lake and the immediate surroundings are a paradise for nature lovers, fishermen, water sports enthusiasts, hikers, and cyclists. Dog lovers and their four-legged friends also get their money's worth here. Lauwersoog, for example, has a dog beach, and you are, among other places, very welcome in the Ballastplaatbos.
There are various play options for children within a few hundred meters of the chalet, including a climbing frame on the beach, a playing field in the De Skâns holiday park, and a playground with a bouncy castle in Esonstad, which is located behind the beach. There is also an indoor play paradise in the old Frisian fortified town, which is open for most of the year, and you can play a round of golf or footgolf at Pitch & Putt. Bicycles or e-scooters can also be rented here.
For your daily groceries (a large supermarket is located a few kilometers away in Anjum), you can also go to the local supermarket in Esonstad. Other facilities include a restaurant, a pizzeria, and a snack bar. Even closer to the chalet—in the marina and on the dike—there are also 3 excellent restaurants with a beautiful view over the Lauwersmeer. You are in the right culinary spot on this former arm of the Wadden Sea. In the harbor of Lauwersoog, you will find a variety of seafood restaurants, and the former seaport of Zoutkamp on the other side of the Lauwersmeer also offers a wide selection of restaurants. Finally, a visit to historic and picturesque Dokkum, with its forts, shops, and terraces, is highly recommended.
To discover the national park from the water, you can of course bring your own boat, but just around the corner from the chalet, you can also rent various sloops, sailboats, or canoes at Paviljoen La Barca. A round trip, a trip to Dokkum, or a birdwatching excursion on the former cargo ship Vlinderbalg are also possible, and a ferry to Schiermonnikoog departs from here several times a week. From Lauwersoog, you can participate in seal and mudflat walking and, depending on the tide, enjoy the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site on the dry Engelsmanplaat.
