Holiday destination
Oostmahorn is an old stronghold on the west side of the Lauwerslake with a rich history dating back to the sixteenth century. Today, it is a very pleasant tourist destination in the Lauwersmeer National Park, featuring various holiday resorts.
The lake itself and the immediate surroundings are a true paradise for nature lovers, fishermen, water sports enthusiasts, cyclists, and hikers. Dogs are also more than welcome here. There is a special beach and a forest for them near Lauwersoog.
Within a few hundred meters, there are several playgrounds for children: at the beach, in the small holiday resort 'de Skâns', and in Esonstad – a holiday resort built as a replica of a typical old Frisian town. In Esonstad, you will even find a bouncy castle and an indoor play area, and you can play golf and footgolf in the local Pitch & Putt area. Renting a bicycle or e-chopper is also possible here.
In Esonstad, you can easily do your daily shopping (a larger supermarket is located just a few kilometers away in Anjum) or find a restaurant, pizzeria, or snack bar.
Three more restaurants are located even closer to your holiday home. Some offer spectacular views of the lake. Other good options for enjoying local seafood dishes are the seaport of Lauwersoog on the north side of the lake, the old fishing village Zoutkamp on the east side of the lake or near Dokkum, the northernmost fortified city of Friesland.
To discover the National Park from the waterside, you can bring your own boat or surf equipment, but boats and sailboats are also available for rent at 'Paviljoen La Barca'. If you prefer catamaran sailing, try the local catamaran club 'Omaho', next to the small marina.
A boat trip, a sailing trip to Dokkum, or a bird or seal expedition can be booked just around the corner, and a ferry to the beautiful island of Schiermonnikoog, with its many kilometers of sandy beaches, also departs from Oostmahorn.
The Lauwerslake (Lauwersmeer in Dutch) is truly popular with fishermen for its large bream, pike, perch, and eel. You can apply for a fishing license at the Holland1 reception.
Do you enjoy walking and relaxing? Then visit the fishing village of Paesens-Moddergat with its small museum and experience the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site with its largest continuous system of intertidal sand and mudflats in the world. Walking across the Wadden Sea mudflats is certainly one of the most memorable activities in the Netherlands. Guided tours can be booked here every day of the year.
Or simply stay and enjoy your holiday home. Just don't forget to look at the universe on a clear night. With the title Dark Sky Park, Lauwersmeer National Park is one of the darkest places in the world. Here you can truly experience nature in the dark!
