The defining feature of the small village is the Paulinzella monastery, which was founded by the Benedictine nuns around 1102. In 1542, it was dissolved in the county of Schwarzburg due to the Reformation and transferred to the Paulinzella office. Soon after, a small hunting lodge for the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was built on the former monastery grounds.
Friedrich Schiller visited Paulinzella in 1788, but Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was not interested in the structure for many years, despite the ruins being not far from Ilmenau, where he often stayed. It was only after Sulpiz Boisserée drew Goethe's attention to the ruins that he visited Paulinzella in 1817.
