The Islek is a very barren and rugged area. Winters are snowy and summers are warm with low humidity. It is known for its mild, stimulating climate and fresh, clean air. The region is sparsely populated and dotted with small, idyllic villages.
The South Eifel is part of the nature park at the German-Luxembourg border. Olmscheid is close to the border with Luxembourg and Belgium. Its lovely valleys Irsental, Ourtal and Enztal make Olmscheid a true gem.
Here, you might even get to see the very rare black stork or the colourful kingfisher. The Irsental is a haven for butterflies and might want to look for beaver tracks. You'll also find rare orchids and other rare flowers such as the straw foxglove. Fragrant herbs such as thyme and oregano grow along the trails.
Listen to the babbling streams and lovely birdsong. That's pure nature!! Those who like the hustle and bustle can visit the nearby, lively Luxembourg or Trier, which is only 60 km away.
