Visit the salt refinery in Ston
Klek is a small Adriatic coastal town in southern Dalmatian situated on the coast road between Split and Dubrovnik. About 80 people live there and make their living in farming, fishing, olive growing and tourism.
Klek is a collection of simple seaside cottages, apartments and villas, gathered around a semi-circular bay with a large pebble beach where you can hire deck chairs, parasols and pedal boats. It is a good spot for a relaxing but activity-filled family vacation, great for cycling, climbing, tennis, football, basketball, volleyball, hiking, diving, sailing and fantastic swimming. The whole area is full of lovely beaches. At your doorstep are sea front restaurants, coffee shops, pizzerias and bakeries which provide hot delicacies.
A few miles north-west up the road there is a sharp contrast in the scenery as the coast road swoops down to the delta of the river Neretva. The rich soil of the estuary has made it the fruit-basket of the whole region, with its fertile groves of oranges and lemons and networks of lakes, rivers, and canals. In the spring and early summer you will find roads lined with cherry, peach and apricot sellers, and in the autumn there will be luscious plums, and later lemons, oranges, grapes and clementines. Huge beefy tomatoes and succulent peppers and cucumbers are the basis of many local salads. The sea is rich in fish and shellfish, and local oysters from nearby Mali Ston are legendary. A very popular outing is the"photo safari" trip in a glass bottom boat, through the rivulets of the river Neretva, between the citrus trees. For longer day trips, you are within an hour's drive of Dubrovnik to the south and to the north, Makarska, which has lovely beaches. The nearby towns of Metkovic and Opuzen are well worth visiting and are the main shopping centres in the region.
