Vittoriosa forms part of "The Three Cities". It is also known as Birgu derived from "Borgo" the Mediterranean term for a coastal village under the shelter of a fort or castle. It was the headquarters of the Order of the Knights of St John and is home to several historical buildings, among which auberges of the knights and the imposing Inquisitor's Palace, located in the Collachio area of town. The magnificent marina promenade is also lined by historical buildings, among which the Palace of the Captains, also known as Scamp’s Palace, nowadays hosting the Casino di Venezia and the ex-British naval bakery, nowadays hosting the Maritime Museum.
