The surrounding area
Barbate is located in the extreme south(west) of the European mainland on the Costa de la Luz in Spain.
It sits between the expansive national park (with its pine forests in the North West - La Breña - and the salt marshes - Marismas - in the South East) and the seemingly never-ending, beautiful and un-crowded white and golden-sand beaches with views of the African coast. With the protection of the local building laws (that do not permit the building of monstrous hotels) the town not only has a truly privileged position but also has managed to keep an original fishing village atmosphere singular to the Spanish Atlantic coast.
Far away from the over-crowded and over-developed Costa del Sol, here you can enjoy an all-year-round holiday under the Andalusian sun. In the winter the daytime temperatures do not fall under 15°C and they practically never exceed 32°C in the height of the Summer. This balance is provided by the Atlantic Ocean.
With more than 300 sunny days in the year, crystal clear water and the extremely clean and healthy air you cannot really ask for more.
It is a fairly well kept secret paradise.
It is only in the high season months (July/August), when Barbate becomes a typical bathing resort. The Spanish natives, suffering under the intense in-land heat, head in droves to the Costas. Being the high season almost everybody lazes at the beaches from dawn until dusk and only go back for a quick Siesta to sleep and re-energize, because it is the time to celebrate and having fun in the warm nights ...
Being a fishing town, the locals get most of their food from the sea. There is always daily fresh fish and all manner of fruits of the sea, everything from the local port. In addition there is excellent, extremely lean beef and in general very high quality meat to be enjoyed. This is mainly because all the animals are free range and come from the expansive pastures in the hinterland.
The famous and particularly delicate meat of the Pata Negra, mostly imported from central Spain is enjoyed as Serrano ham or grilled as Cerdo Iberico. In addition there are excellent Andalusian wines (Antonio Barbadillo is a favourite white), the legendary Sherry de Jerez or a cool, amazingly good Spanish beer, usually Cruzcampo, Mahou and the obligatory San Miguel.
The locals are open, tolerant, hospitable, cheerful and warm and everywhere you go you can meet relaxed, balanced and friendly contemporaries. and see people chatting at every corner or fishing in the sea ... and of course they are also working but far from our hectic Northern European idea of it.
Barbate is a world away from most Spanish mainland coastal resorts and the islands because here you can truly feel like you have got away from it ALL - only rarely will you meet with foreign tourists. Having said this if you run out of tea bags or have a sudden craving for cheddar cheese or a curry Gibraltar is only an hour away.
For the non-standard vacation and without feeling like you are being herded like cattle, Barbate should always be your first choice for quality.

Travel information
... by plane
GIBRALTAR (Costa del Sol)
British Airways and Monarch Crown Service both fly regular schedule services.
It is better to book well in advance to get the real bargains. At the cheapest, you can find a return flight for under 100Pounds but if you leave it too late this could double.
There are plently of car hire companies in Gibraltar but book the car with your flight. The prices are comparable to or are slightly cheaper than those in Spain.
The journey by car takes between and hour to an hour and a half and you will see some fantastic views of the African coast once you have passed Algeciras. There are also buses from across the frontier in the town La Linea de la Concepcion and also a taxi rank (around 50Pounds).
If necessary we may be able pick you up for a fee but this would have to be arranged in advance by e-mail.
JEREZ (Costa de La Luz)
Buzz has scheduled services from Stanstead to Jerez. Other schedule flights are also available.
There are also some chartered services from the UK.
There are the standard car hire services available at Jerez and the journey takes between 45 minutes and an hour.
The bus service is not to be recommended as the connections are not great.
If necessary we may be able pick you up for a fee but this would have to be arranged in advance by e-mail.
MALAGA (Costa del Sol)
There are a host of schedule - including easyJet - and charter operators flying here from all of the major and many minor UK airports.
This destination has the bonus of far more flights and the EasyCar.com rental facility.
The bus service to Barbate is long as it takes in the region of four to five hours and includes at least one change but the service is good to La Barca de Vejer, 9 km from Barbate. The journey by car and bus is picturesque once past the heavy developments of the Costa del Sol and by car takes about 3 hours but could take more depending on the time of year and the number of tourists on the road.
If necessary we may be able pick you up for a fee but this would have to be arranged in advance by e-mail.
SEVILLE
There are schedule services but could be expensive. It could be worthwhile if you fancy a stopover to see the city.
If necessary we may be able pick you up for a fee but this would have to be arranged in advance by e-mail. |
