The surrounding area
The small town Aigio (ca. 30.000 inhabitants) is 3 km away from Katsaris apartment. Nikoleika beach is located 1.5km from the apartment while various other beaches are a short drive such as Temeni, Valimitika, Elaionas (Tripia), Pounta (Trapeza beach), Longos and Selianitika. The apartment can also be the base for your excursions in the surrounding areas of rich natural and cultural interest. From nearby Diakopto (2km away from apartment) a unique cogwheel railway (odontotos) takes you to Kalavrita town, a route that offers you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent natural scenery. Alternatively you could drive to Kalavrita and visit its surrounding traditional stone-built villages situated in breath-taking plane-tree forests as well as the eminent “Cave Lakes” with their limestone stalactites and stalagmites. You could taste fresh fish in Planitari’s trout farm at the spring of Aroanios River. You may also visit Tsivlou’s Lake at an altitude of 800 meters, Zarouhla’s forest, the impressive 9th century monastery of Mega Spilaio and the 1st century Saint Lavra Monastery which is the symbolic birth-place of modern Greece as the war of Independence was launched there in 1821. Other places worth visiting are Ancient Egira with its well-known ancient theatre, Virgin Mary Tripiti in Egio and the small chapel of Virgin Plataniotissa in Plataniotissa village, a beautiful village with abundant spring waters. The chapel is a unique site as it is being tucked inside the hollow of a large plane.
